Rainbow star plaques

Today I am revisiting a project I did last year - creating my star plaques - I make quite a few of these for our pop up craft shop and the occasionally craft fair. This time I thought I would do a bright version. (You can see the original version here).

I took 2 plaques (6x3") and randomly added distress paints. I start with a brush but end up applying with my finger!

Once dry I wanted to crackle them - so added some Deco Art Weathered wood. A thin layer - using a credit card.

Normally at this stage - once dry - you quickly add the top layer of paint. Not quite sure what went wrong this time but when I added my top layer the crackles were not forming as I wished so wiped most of it away - resulting in two differing results. I quite like them - you can still the crackles - one very subtle - the other more like peeling paint.

My stars are created with greyboard - as thick as the bigz die will take! Again I created random colours on the board - using distress paints - but this time with a little marbling and drying between colours.

 Once dry I cut my stars using the Big Shot.

My words this time were computer generated, but I often use chit chat stickers. I also added some glitter to one of the plaques this time.

 I glue them on and then add glossy accents. When dry I adhere to the plaque with glossy accents. I add stickles around the edges.

The seam binding was coloured with distress stains.

Live, laugh, love with paper artsy

 Hi everyone, Nikki here (Addicted to Art) to share a decorated MDF plaque with you today.

I took my plaque, some cut and dry foam and paper artsy paints and gently sponged it in a couple of colours. I used iced blue and south pacific here. I start with the lighter colour, add some darker and then a little more lighter depending how the sponged effect is looking. Once dry I took the background stamp from Tim Holtz 'Papillon' and stamp the plaque using ranger white pigment ink.

I then sponged a little black soot distress paint around the edges. 

For my stars I begin with some greyboard and adhere some black and white patterned paper to it - this bit is optional - just white card would do. I cut some stars with the sissix bigz star die and I paint the stars with a translucent colour - South Pacific again here. With the paint being translucent any paper pattern will show through. I add to this with black paint using the edge of a credit card and, once the black is dry, splattering some white paint ( I use a paint brush and just flick it around). No picture here but I also take a black pen to ink up the edges.

I then take my chosen words - usually from the Chit chat or Big chat collections but I have run out of my selected words so did these on the computer. I stick them on and then cover the stars in glossy accents and leave to dry overnight.

Once dry I fix to my plaque and add some string, seam binding or ribbon to hang.

Be an Individual

Hello everyone, Astrid here with an 8 x 8" wall plaque, inspired by Tim Holtz. I really wanted to play with some of my new stamp sets, and this seemed the perfect project for it.

I started with a sheet from the new 8 x 8 Tim Holtz Paperie Menagerie mini stash, and because I wanted the background to my piece to be quite bland, I started by covering it with a thin coat of gesso and then stamped around the edges with stamps from the Mercantile and Papillion sets by Tim Holtz to frame the page a bit.

Time to start working on the tags. For the first one I started by stamping one of the stamps from the Classic 19 set in Versamark ink and then embossed it with clear embossing powder. I then blended a mix of Antique Linen, Stormy Sky and Frayed Burlap Distress inks with my blending tool and added some further stamping with stamps from the Distress Damask set in Coffee Archival Ink. I also added some strips of the Journeyman Tissue Tape for a bit more interest to one corner.

To finish this first one I added an Ideaology Pen Nib, a wing from the Regal Adornments and a flower, created with the Bigz Pinecone die.

The background to tag number two was created with the help of Distress Stains, using the same three colours.

I spritz some water to let the colours marble and while still wet added a little Picket Fence Distress Paint and spritzt with water again the let that mix into the other colours. I then blended some Frayed Burlap and Walnut Stain Distress Inks around the edges.

To embellish my tag I stamped some stamps from the Mercantile set, straight onto the tag and also on to a piece of a Journaling Ticket. I added a piece of film strip and some remnant rubs and finally finished with an Ornate Plate and a small strip from the Industrious Stickers, Frames and Trims pack. Some stenciling with the Latticework Layering Stencil and a Sentiment from the Going Somewhere set, stamped in Black archival, finished it all off.

I altered the Ornate Plate with some Tumbled Glass Distress Paint and some Vintage Photo Distress Embossing Powder, and cut a vintage photograph from one of the Menagerie papers to go behind the opening.

Now for the finishing touches: I darkened the edges of my 8 x 8 background with Coffee Archival Ink, glued it onto a piece of 8 x 8 mount-board from my stash and put pieces of Elements Tissue Tape around all four sides.

I added some decorative brads to the top of my tags and then glued them onto the background, one slightly overlapping the other.
